I Remember Mama

Celebrating Mothers With Meaningful Moments

Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate the women who shape our lives with patience, resilience, and love. But for the women in VOA's programs, this holiday carries both love and loss. Your kindness can turn this day into something truly special.

Make Mother’s Day Special

Every Mother’s Day, VOA walks alongside the mothers in our programs who are embarking on new chapters in their lives. Some are experiencing their very first Mother’s Day with a baby in their arms. Others have spent years caring for their families and are now navigating new challenges.

Your gift of $35 sponsors a mother’s place at our annual “I Remember Mama” celebration. Each guest is welcomed with:

  • A delicious catered meal
  • Thoughtful gifts
  • Handmade cards by local fourth-grade students

These small but meaningful touches create a space where mothers feel seen, valued, and celebrated.

Meet the Women You’re Supporting

KATHY

Kathy never imagined starting over in her seventies.

After her husband passed, the loss was more than heartbreak. Without his income, she could no longer afford the apartment they had shared for 20 years.

Within months, everything was gone. With no family to call, she packed what she could and walked away from the life they had built together.

She arrived at Hope House overwhelmed and unsure of what came next. But she was met with warmth, steady support, and someone to walk alongside her. While waiting for housing, she found unexpected comfort in a knitting circle and Tuesday nights spent watching true crime with other women who understood loss in their own way.

Then, a door opened. A small studio she could afford. A space of her own. Because of the VOA, Kathy found safety, dignity, and the chance to begin again.

RITA & LINDA

Rita and Linda are sisters who were separated as children and raised in different orphanages. Years later, they found each other again and moved to Spokane to rebuild their relationship.

But rising rents forced them into homelessness.

When winter rolled around again three years later, they came to Hope House seeking help. With the guidance of their case manager, they worked through the long process of securing housing and searching for a place they could afford. The following October, their hard work paid off!

Today, Rita and Linda are living together in a senior apartment where they finally have safety, stability, and each other. Some stories take a lifetime to find their happy chapter.

ELENA

“Hope House helped me find peace again.” – Elena

When Elena arrived, she was battling cancer and struggling to care for herself. Simple daily tasks felt impossible.

She told her case manager she wanted a home with support and compassion. Together, they visited Adult Family Homes until they found one that felt right – quiet, warm, and welcoming.

While her intake was being processed, Hope House was her refuge. It was a place where she could rest, receive meals, make appointments, and feel cared for. Today, Elena has moved into her new home, with daily care and a private room of her own. Her journey reminds us that healing is more than medical, it’s deeply human.
