Young Adult Shelter: A Safe Haven and Beacon of Hope
In 2021, Volunteers of America opened the Young Adult Shelter (YAS)—Spokane’s first and only shelter dedicated solely to homeless young adults aged 18-24. For many young people facing unimaginable challenges, YAS offers more than a bed—it provides a sense of belonging.
Open 24/7 and welcoming all individuals aged 18-24, YAS is a safe haven for young adults in crisis. It is a place where young people find safety, compassion, and the resources to rebuild their lives.

Homelessness among young adults is often compounded by untreated mental health challenges, substance use, and chronic health conditions. YAS meets these challenges head-on by offering a low-barrier, inclusive environment that provides stability, care, and hope.
A Pathway to Stability and Transformation
YAS provides a whole-person approach to breaking the cycle of homelessness, offering essential services and transformative support:
- Safe Shelter: Secure overnight accommodation with clean beds, meals, showers, and clothing.
- Case Management: Dedicated housing specialists help participants set goals and access vital resources.
- Comprehensive Support Services: Behavioral health services, telehealth, life skills classes, and care coordination.
- Community Collaboration: Partnerships with local agencies offer access to education, legal aid, financial counseling, and spiritual support.
Our ultimate goal is to move young adults quickly into stable, permanent housing, empowering them with the tools and skills they need to thrive.
Building a Brighter Future
At YAS, young adults receive wraparound services designed to promote long-term stability and independence:
- Independent Living Skills: Financial literacy, tenant rights, and job readiness are taught through our Life Enrichment Program.
- Housing Support: Assistance with housing applications, lease signing, move-in deposits, and securing low-income housing options.
- Employment and Education Resources: Partnerships with Spokane Community College, Job Corps, and local trade programs provide access to training and job opportunities.
- Health and Wellness Advocacy: On-site behavioral health clinicians and street medicine teams ensure participants receive compassionate, coordinated care.
- Family Reunification: Personalized plans help participants rebuild relationships with loved ones when possible.
